Homemade Drum Sander: shaft, pulleys and other bits?

Hello all,
I want to build a drum-sander.
A basic machine to start with.. no automatic feed, but I'm stuck for a supplier of shafts.
Probably 1-metre long, and I'm guessing 20mm dia.
Similarly, I foolishly thought I'd be able to buy alu pulleys here in Geelong. Not easy.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Its something that i'm thinking of for later. But was going to use the wood lathe. Just need something adjustable for the deck.

I'd seen them but was torn between going metric and good-old imperial.
The ebay ones are imperial, so I suppose a 3/4" shaft is what I'd want.
They also appear to be keyed but I could just drill & tap a screw.

Anyone know where I'd find a suitable 3/4" by approx 36" shaft?
Round steel rod isn't straight enough. Some others have used 5/8" threaded rod.
The idea of using threaded rod doesn't appeal to me.

I've seen inclined planes and horizontal decks... with various mechanisms to raise and lower.
I'm toying with the idea of a horizontal deck raised and lowered by four threaded rods which are coupled by chain & sprockets.
It sounds complicated but actually not bad.. I've seen several that use this approach.

and if you haven't seen them there are free plans for drum sander on woodgears - he also uses wooden pulley.

I got my shaft from a local engineering workshop for a few dollars - showed the chap a picture of what I wanted to make and he had something out the back that he cut to length for me. Amazing to watch him cut the metal shaft on a really big slow spinning circular blade went through it quite easily.

I was going to suggest this supplier and didn't realise they had an Ebay store. They will have all the engineering supplies you will ever need like bearings, belts, wheels, etc. They have a shop front so you can go and see what you want and talk to them.
Not sure why you would think that round bar is not straight enough if brought from a reputable supplier. It would be straighter than threaded bar.

That is the same as what I was thinking. Use a lathe and you could have a table to use it like a flea sander (where your timber goes over the sander) and you could have one a table like you say, adjustable height to pass your timber under the paper
