    Default Kanna kanji ID

    Hi all,

I picked up this dainaoshi kanna a little while ago, and was wondering if anyone could ID the maker for me. It's a cool little plane, someone obviously cut down a standard dai to make it. The blade is gorgeous, slightly wonky ura and all. It makes me wish I knew more about its origins. Thanks to anyone who can help.

    Cheers.

    Welcome to the forum.

I will have to pass on this one.

Here are a few makers and their stamps/signatures:

Does anyone else know of another database?

Thanks Neil, I looked there already. It is possible I missed something though, so I'll look again.

As an aside, my apologies for joining the forum and only asking questions. I'm afraid I don't have much to contribute that has not already been stated. Nevertheless, thank you for allowing me to take advantage of all your collective wisdom.

No apologies needed. We all started knowing very little and asking questions is a good way to move from there.

I've tried a couple of times to come up with a reading for the kanji on your blade, but its a little too stylized for me to match. But it looks like a good find.

Thanks for trying. That was the same problem I had. It is a great little blade. It's hard to describe how smooth the surface is from forging, despite its cragginess. It's like a stone that's been smoothed over by ages of tides.

    From the expert:

    Only my guess.

The upper Kanji probably reads “jaku“ or “jan” meaning “mah-jong” or “sparrow” respectively.
The lower Kanji may read “hou” or “taku” meaning “treasure” or “house” respectively.
