    Default Prostate Biopsy Costs

Can any one comment on the recent cost of a prostate biopsy?

My urologist's fee is $1000 apparently plus all the other costs which his receptionist was a bit vague on.

I am thinking there would be fees for the Anesthetic guy, day theatre fees, consumables and pathology costs maybe.

Looks like up around 4K - I have NIB health insurance but suspect I will be majorly out of pocket.

I have had two, one in 2010, then again in 2011.
Urologist fee was around $750, medibank private covered all but $88.
    Hospital was fully covered.
    Anesthetist gap was around $150.

Thanks for that information - may not be as costly as I thought.

    Hi,

I had a prostate biopsy done in May 2013. I have Bupa private health insurance. The first Uroligist that my GP referred me to gave me a quote and my out of pocket expenses for the surgeon and the anethestics guy would have been around $ 1,500, plus any hospital out of pocket expenses.

So, while I was on the phone to Bupa finding out what the out of pocket expenses would be, I asked them if they had a list of Specialists and Hospitals that offered "no gap" pricing. They gave me the name of two specialists in Ipswich, who both operate at teh same private hospital. I then got my GP to refer me to one of BUPA's no-gap specialists. I had the procedure done at St Andrew's Private Hospital in Ipswich a fortnight later. I had two nights in hospital. My total out of pocket expenses were $35.00 for take home medications provided by the hospital pharmacy on discharge, and $25.00 for sundry hospital services not covered by medicare or Bupa (things like WIFI Internet, Pay TV, etc).

The moral of the story - talk to your Health Insurance Fund to see if they have no-gap arrangements with a suitable surgeon and hospital.

    Hope that info helps.
