    Default Spice boxes

Thought I would share some pics of three boxes I made for my eldest daughter to hold her spice bottles, made to strict internal dimensions. She also wanted a silky oak box with dovetails, and a box with two different timbers. The latter was done with African Ash (koto) and an Indonesian Kapur offcut from a stair case.

I have included a box made of blackbean with mitred joints and continuous grain around all 4 sides by resawing a board of blackbean.

All three boxes are finished with three coats of non diluted Livos Kunos #244 sealing oil, which has a predominant linseed oil base, the last coat added with 0000 steel wool and then excess rubbed off quickly. They were then left to cure for a couple of weeks under cover of the rear patio, without direct sunlight, plenty of ventilation, as you do for linseed oil products.

The finish has a beautiful silky soft lustrous finish, with a nice low sheen as intended.

I was a bit disappointed with the box with the two timbers. The end grain of the pale koto end pieces turned much darker than intended, even though it was sanded to 320 grit. Should I have first done a sealing coat of the koto boards with shellac ( 1:10 mix with metho) after assembly but before doing the first coat of oil?

Very nice.... You've got the gift.

I'll make sure Mal gets some more blackbean and walnut up to you after the auction

    Nice work, Dengue.
You could put some white shellac on the end grain to prevent the oil darkening it. As you know, I do the whole thing in shellac before oiling, using either white or orange, depending on the colour of the wood.

Good tip I'll have to try and remember Alex, but on Dengue's boxes I reckon the contrast of the endgrain helps the overall look

    Default GREAT JOY!!!!!

The boxes have finally arrived after sitting in the Ipswich PO for 10 days. My daughter only goes to the PO on weekends to check her mail, and the week it arrived in Ipswich PO she decided to do some travel the following weekend to Stanthorpe wineries etc. I am in the wars for not letting her know they were on the way, I was only trying to surprise her

She took some time off work the following Fri pm, and just made the PO before 5pm.

We got a very happy phone call not long after - they were exactly what she wanted, so very pleased with them, she was. I was told to keep the design and any templates for her future orders Pics were posted on her Facebook for all to see, as you do!
