I've got a book by Lonnie bird that tells you how but it's not up here at the house. I'll go dig it out tomorrow if someone else doesn't have what you want. But I think from memory it is basically a carving job.

    Yes . Rule no 1 . Draw it .

A front view and a side through view , to match your intended thicknesses and tool and cutter sizes, and moulds.

If you don't do that, give up, or be prepared for average results and a struggle

If it is being shaped this way you need left and right skew chisels to do it as well.

I thought there would be carving involved thanks for the ponters, that book would be a great read.

the cross grain bottom and both long edges are straight forward -- just do the cross grain work first and leave the long edges until the arch is finished.

    for the arch
carving chisels or skew chisels for the inside corners but most of the curve can be completed with a spokeshave
mark your lines and work to them

Thanks Ian when I saw a response in my inbox I quickly skipped to the text after having read it I said I bet this is from my old mate Ian and lo and behold I was right. Always good to hear from you.

The spokeshave is a great idea but I think it will be hard though as I'm worried about tearout and really that is the best solution I've heard so far.

I dug that book out. Unfortunately he has cheated a bit. He cuts the blank to shape on the band saw then uses a panel raising cutter in his shaper around the whole panel. The only thing he does by hand is to mitre out the sections where the panel raising cutter leaves a circular shape in the corners either side of the arch. He uses a chisel to remove the waste and then left and right skews and a carving gouge to finish the shape. There's no pointers on how you would raise the arched section of the panel by hand.

Thanks for going to the trouble I have the same in my book we must probably have the same book. I guess it's too hard or cumbersome to do by hand for modern day woodworkers it's nuts like me who enjoy every minute of it.

We'll it seems from that diagram, that the power tool method just deletes the sharp inside panel corner.

Yes that bit has to be done by hand no matter what. But it makes all the difference I think.
