Hey, I think it's a great idea! When my eyesight is completely gone, and my fingers have lost all sensitivity, one of these gauges, with an audible read-out, will be just the ticket!
Hmm, but when I get to that stage, I suppose I won't be woodworking any more, anyway.......
Cheers,IW

strangely I feel comforted sometimes putting a number to something, I have no need to number.
It could be handy for setting thickness table rollers maybe. but is it worth buying. I'll forget to turn it off….waste batteries or it'll fall into the shavings, get lost and finally reveal its position when I hear a crack.

My first reaction was that it was a joke.
my second was that it was a waste of money
But you know, with Christmas coming up perhaps one would be a bit of fun.My age is still less than my number of posts

The list of things I'm never going to buy is very long , why would I try and bore you with any of it though ?
What I think may be interesting to do with this is . a set of radius's could be worked out for my plane blades , most of my many smoothers have a curve to the blade , And I have always done it by eye and feel , and that works fine.
What I'm thinking of is , I could measure the width of my blade , then with this, accurately measure the segment height and that would tell me what radius I have , I don't know what they are at the moment , some where between 1 and 4 meter radius's I think , I m not about to go off drawing big circles to see . With this information I can then know if it is a good way to organize some of my planes .
When smoothing with radius's to the blade then cabinet scraping , you don't see the results until the end of the polish job. It's at this stage I find myself standing in the show room talking to the guy who planed the top saying what I think of his planing job and what I think of the way the blade of his smoother has been ground.
At that point instead of saying a little more or less, which gets frustrating I may be saying lets try a 3.8 meter radius ,instead of 4.2 .
Just something i want to try . amongst other things .
My one has been paid for and will be shipped when they get it in stock .

I still have a small piece of ply covered in white paint, with parallel pencil marks made off the edge about 2mm, just ruffly using my fingers as marking gauge. I just lay the plane blade over the board with middle of the blade on the edge of the board and sharpen the blade edges till the sides of the blade line up with the pencil marks. or to at least maintain the curvature thats working for that particular plane. an attempt at consistency.
Could have different lines for different radiuses.
just an opinion. Not an expert on rolling off edges (or whatever you call it). 2 cents worth.

yeah I know what you mean ,been doing the same thing , mainly by eye though.
The numbers is what may be interesting . who knows ? I may need to describe it to someone a long way away ?
I had a very nice girl / woman come in one day and describe a coffee table she had seen and she wanted on made just like it , The dimensions she had made note of by using her leg for the height . I had to get down and measure the spot on her leg that she was pointing to with her Mum watching, me with a bit of a red face they were having a laugh and I thought it nice she didn't have a tape measure .
It got me thinking how I could take curves and shapes of My favorite lady and design a lovely shapely piece of love furniture with them . It never happened though . one day maybe !

Thats for planing 101 for dummies.
If after a bit of practice and a couple of projects you still cant get the feel of and know your plane then perhaps woodworking with planes is not for youThe person who never made a mistake never made anything
