1100-1200mm wide sander Melbourne
Wondering if anyone knows of a 1100mm plus belt or drum sander in Melbourne?
i've laminated an 1100mm wide Blackwood table top but in sanding it I have left subtle undulations in it that are detectable by running my hand across the surface and plates will wobble when they are in the wrong spot. Not a lot of material needs to come off, I think a couple of passes with a fine grit paper will do the job.
any other ideas on how to achieve a flat table top?
thanks
Pete

I don't know of any close to the city, but you can always try some door manufacturers. They usually have wide drum sanders. You might find one willing to run your piece through for a few bucks.

"home made" Stroke sander
Once watched some guys make a stupendous table with ancient Kauri. It was 40 foot long and 10 wide.
No machine of earth could make that flat (well, OK, the Russians perhaps have something!)
They put long lengths of sandpaper roll onto heavy flat planks. The planks were 2" thick and 15 feet long and sandpaper roll was mounted under that. Two dudes slid it back and forth at a large number of angles and had the table dead flat in absolutely no time flat.
It was hard work, as the "log" they were heaving back and forth was long and heavy, but yours needn't scale up to such a monster.
A flat 1 Metre long 90x45 pine with the ends rounded up and some suitable grit roll from TSPM (for example: http://www.thesandpaperman.com.au/76...m-sander-roll/ ) would give you a really long flat sanding tool you could sand flatten this very quickly.
Its hardly a super-dooper use-every-day solution, but its cheap and 100% effective.
Since its Friday, it will make you sweat up and get dusty enough for a few beers this arvo!
Edit! ----- found it: http://www.ancientwood.com/the-proce.../#!prettyPhoto

A floor sander is what I used first! Did a fantastic job except for some minor spots. A big sanding board sounds like a plan!
Thanks everyone!

Just saw your post now, but if you need one in the future we've got a 1350mm wide belt at work in Moorabbin.

Neil, if you don't get a satisfactory response, may I suggest that you start ringing (your) local joinery shops - many will have thickness sanders capable of handling stuff 1200, 1500 or even 2000 mm wide.
Most will quote for jobs with new timber. Very few will allow second hand or repurposed materials near their machines.

These guys might be able to help. I noticed on Facebook that they have recently received a new drum sander and were offering to sand any large slabs for that woodworkers had
