Bandsaw repair
Hi everyone
I have a Carbatec 14inch bandsaw that is about 6 years old. Today when I switched it on the motor made a buzzing sound and the band didn't turn. It had been working perfectly well only a couple of minutes before. The wheels and band spin quite freely when the motor is off. When I released tension on the drive belt and turned it on the motor turned very slowly and buzzed a lot. Any suggestions as to how to rectify this problem would be appreciated.
Thanks
Ross

If there is a capacitor on the motor that would be the prime suspect.

I agree with BS.
Put the tension back onto the belt
Remove the blade and bypass the microswitches.
Spin the wheel connected to the motor by hand and turn on the motor,
Be prepared to remove your hand quickly from the wheel.
If the motor starts and turns the wheel it will be the capacitor.
Please be careful while doing this.

Thanks. I'm guessing that would be the big black cylinder.

I have by-passed the switch and removed the capacitor (or what I assume is the capacitor) and still just get a buzz from the motor. No movement at all.

It would definitely be the capacitor, cost to replace about $20.00 to DIY. Look at the numbers on the side ?uf which is the microfarad, get one the same or slightly larger. Your local electrical supply or tool repair centre will/should have them.

Bingo. Just wasn't spinning the wheel hard enough. So looks definitely like the capacitor. Thanks for all the advice
