    Default J-Tool Gathering

As part of an ongoing email discussion between myself and NielS, on some finer details of Japanese natural stones, sharpening & Japanese tools. The idea of organising a Japanese tool weekend came up. The preliminary proposition at this point is a gathering of Japanese tool aficionados, a day were we could learn some finer details of sharpening, tool setup and use. As well as have the opportunity to purchase a range of J-tools from reputable dealers while ogling some droll worthy tools.

We are thinking that if we could get enough people to sign on then we could get some guest speakers, Japanese craftsman and tool dealers to sign on as well. Most likely the event would take place in Sydney, we would need to organise a venue and lunch for all participating, while reimbursing travel costs to any guests speakers if needed.

At this point we are looking for a show of hands. So if you are interested you know what to do.

Sounds interesting, however a Sydney venue would rule me out.

The exact date will in all likely hood be months away. Stage one we need get enough people to sign on, then stage 2 we would need to get the guest to sign on and then stage 3 a date would need to be agreed to that was suitable for everyone involved. So far we have 4-5 people interested - at this point 20 people would be the magic number needed to move to stage 2.

Sydney is a bit far for me too unfortunately.
I'd like to see it happen though.

I haven't looked down the Japanese tools path too much, but if the date was good I'd be very inclined to attend if I was to learn something new.

I was going to suggest a traveling show of users that meets here and there to see the latest tools produced in a given area; but then I realized how silly that would be.

    Pam's idea is interesting.

If it was a meetup in Japan visiting all the makers and tool shops there, I might be interested.

Funny, there is a meet-up in Japan twice a year, and it is the Greatest Show On Earth as far as japanese tools and their use is concerned. It is called Kezurou-kai (wood planing meet). Most of you here know about it but I never see any of you there.

Nice, it sounds like a lot of fun. I've added it on my to-do list for any future trips to Japan.

Might be if you're male and speak/read Japanese; otherwise you may as well stay home, take some expensive classes, buy lots more tools, whatever.
