depth of cut with shelix heads in 15" thicknesser
hey guys.
I am planning on purchasing one of those 15" thicknessers from carbatec for my garage woodshop. and i will install a shelix head to reduce the sound for the neighbours.
my question is, how much material can I take off in one pass on something kinda hard and dense...say ironbark for example. I would hate to find that it struggles with more than 1.5mm/pass because that will force at least 3-4 passes just to take a 2inch rough sawn board down to 45mm.

I use one at our men's shed and for a full width cut you wouldn't want to take much more than 1.5-2mm in one cut. The machine just grinds to a stop and trips out with a cut larger than 2 for a hardwood like Blackwood.

At work, using a 600mm thicky w/shelix head, we find that 2mm is the max 'clean' cut even for soft woods such as cedar.
The machine handles the load just fine, but tear-out, etc. start to become major issues with bigger bites.

Motor power will determine your depth of cut more than the head. At work we're running a Shelix head in an old 24" SCM (10hp) and it CAN take 10mm in a pass on narrow stuff (probably no more than 100mm wide) but full width is about 1-2mm on the slowest feed speed.
The wider you go the less depth of cut you can have.
