Back in the shed today. I worked on the main drive wheels (18 spokes) and trailing wheels (11 spokes). I drew up the wheel spokes with correct angle spacings for the differing spoke configurations. I photocopied these so the would all be the same for the 18 spoke and 11 spoke wheels and then glued them on the inner blanks. I then cut out the spokes using my band saw. The inner blanks (spoke section) and out rims are a press fit. I placed PVA glue around the inside of the outer rim and pressed in the inner spoked section. I then went around and placed extra glue at the contact point of each spoke. I then removed excess glue. I will allow it to dry overnight before doing any filing or sanding work on the spoked wheels. I reckon they will be pretty strong and with careful work the spokes won't break. Didn't break or crack any spokes in the bandsaw cutting process. Glad I did some practice a week or so ago to get technique correct.

    Keith

Well done on the cutout Keith. I can relax now. Shaping the spokes from here should be easy going after that.

    Dallas,
Thanks to you - the blanks were great. Made the spokes a fraction wider and also changed method of holding the blank whilst using bandsaw.

    Thanks again

    Hi All,

Now I remember how much I hate filing and sanding. (Did a lot of that on the Trevithick locomotive).

Took me 6 hours to just sand and smooth 2 of the main drive wheels. 4 wheels to go. Might turn up the main crankshaft as next job. Not so boring.

Trev, you might have a pun here

    Regards

    Keith

Only six hours remember we talked about taking your time and not rushing the work.

Keith that wheel looks fantastic mate.
It's the dedication to do the job that makes the difference.
If this is an example of effort your going to put into Lion.
Then the end result will be a sight to behold!

    Great work Keith.

    Cheers
    Trev.

Yeah, Thanks Trev, hard to get to grips with not rushing after the "incident". Will try harder - thanks.

I ran the wheels on a spindle I made up to check for concentricity and ensure no wobble. All 6 wheels have come up great. The press fit of the inner and outer rim worked a treat. Thanks again Dallas. I thought there may have been a bit of a problem of my fitting and gluing of the inners and outers, but has come up great.

Ground down the cylinder retaining bolts as per our discussion.

Probably will work on the wheels tomorrow so I can get the drivers in situ to align the drive wheel crankshaft to the cylinder pistons.

    Thanks for comments

    Regards

    Keith

Wow averaging 3 hours per wheel. That is the sort of job I would think of doing while watching TV/DVD. It takes a lot of dedication to put in that much effort but some jobs cannot be rushed, nor can you use machine.

    Keep up the good work.

    Peter,

Definitely a slow, but possibly ??? fruitful journey of being patient ?????.

I think only the XR6 has the power to spin wheels.

    Hi All,

What a bad day in the shed. Waste of 7 hours. Learn by mistakes I suppose.

I machined up the front main wheel shaft out of aluminium. Nice sliding fit for bearings. Slide fit for wheel bores - going great guns. Then tried to fit in position - won't go in. The motion plate supports are in the way.
Brilliant idea - cut the shaft in half and machine up a coupling to join the shafts together. Did this. Can't get the 2 halves together, coupling halves foul. Brilliant idea - machine the shaft so that the coupling will slide along to allow me to fit the 2 ends together.
Got it together with great difficulty. Now realise I won't be able to get the wheel supports bearings on. Now in bin !! (Shaft and coupling).
Will show the photos anyway !!

Redesign of motion plate support is now required.
Couple of extra days work I reckon. No work in shed tomorrow (thank goodness ???) helping son with some building work. Joys of modelling !!!!!!

Hope you all had a better day,

    Regards

    Keith

You are right there mate, always using thinking about the next step. Better than watching TV - life's good

Have redesigned the motion plate support. I reckon it is even a better idea than the original prototype !!! ???

Wish I was going to be out in the shed again tomorrow, but my son does need help. Always time to work on the loco Tuesday, Wednesday......etc etc

    Regards
