Thanks for the offer Ian , I rang BOC and they have the toolcraft rods at about $40 for 20 rods .
The Arc is going to be messy though compared to TIG . I dont have TIG but would like one .

Thanks Karl . could the toolcraft rod have the flux knocked off and be used with the TIG ? Or just get the right filler rod for the TIG ?

I looked at some TIG's online . Are these two machined decent buy's ? both are on ebay .

Normally the covering on a rod is not only the flux but also has a few alloying things shoved in there to add to the weld pool. You may be able to do this with some rods but I would not suggest it. Better off getting the "known quantity" of a proper TIG filler.

Michael G is dead right. The name escapes me now, but Lincoln actually made an electrode that had a mild steel wire, but due to the composition of the flux, gave a stainless deposit. I would guarantee that the Toolcraft will be a similar proposition.
$40 for 20 rods is actually a lot better than I thought they may have been. Those 20 rods could repair many $$$ worth of components.
I wouldn't be too scared of using the stick welder if you are competent. I don't know what type of stick welder you would use, but a check of the OCV requirements for toolcraft would be in order as I am unsure if they are a 45V or 70V electrode if AC is used.
If you were to make the jump to a tig, just remember that you also need a cylinder of gas to go with it and that is a monthly rental proposition. Any DC stick welder will tig weld by the way, so if you have access to one of those then add a tig torch with gas valve and you are on your way.

Only problem would be a lot of heat input into the component. Then again, oxy was once our go to option for everything, so it probably has been done before by someone.
