Today's Auction
I went to an auction today and some cheap prices on boxes of #4ae795698a498b61c7f9bb041fd0415b.jpg drills & reamers etc went to the dealer a but I don't imagine there is a huge demand for that size. Then pretty much all else went at stupid prices that make ebay look cheap.
I was interested in 2x 3" waldown vices. The we're the Swiss cheese model.
The photos is of the better of the two sold for $80 +15%+gst each.
I picked up a box of random items just to make the trip worth it.
Big blue tap wrench & tap?
5 boxes of screws
Brown & sharp stand with something dial indicator, missing the little screw in tip.
Adjustable angle block for magnetic vice.
Small vice with soft jaws.
A box of springs.
I bought it for the dialindicator on angle block. Both of these should clean up nicely. Is it possible to get a new tip??
Vice may come in handy, screw can always be used.
Springs anyone have any ideas what they could be useful for?
Tap is probably a bit on the large side, again can't think what I would use it for????…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

If anyone wants details or measurements, more photos etc let me know.
Stu, Are the contact tips available readily as spares? Universal etc?
I'm thinking fine steel wool or a mild scotchbrite pad to clean them up/ remove the surface rust without affecting the precision ground surfaces… Thoughts?…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

Auctions
talking of auctions
The swap meets I've been at recently usually have a certain vendor who sells this kind of stuff
I was talking to him and he said he buys in bulk from the big auctions . He'd been to Qantas, GMH and defence dept. auctions , he was saying he has container loads of the stuff . Among his goodies He had TESA dial gauges , almost new for 40$ and other top brand metrology items , NO Asian junk . Mike

I wonder if that is the same bloke I was talking to today. I bought my straight edge of him 2yrs ago which came from Qantas. Every time he sees me he says " I sold that straight edge to you for too cheap.." Well at least he remembers me..I guess he is waiting to make up for it on the next sale..…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

Most tooling suppliers who sell dial indicators should be able to manage a tip for you. In a rare show of sense, all metric indicators have one size thread tip (I think it is M2.5) and all the imperial indicators have an equivalent imperial tip.
I'm with the others - dimensions and other details of that mag block would be great.

I've got the "Ward" version of that stand. It weighs about 30 lbs. I don't know why I've kept it all these years. Beautifully machined cast iron base and column. Mine has a dovetail at the bottom of the 1" diameter column with a steel rod through it and a similar cast iron knurled knob at the top. They certainly made them solid in the old days.

I jumped in the car in the early hours and ran a couple of bags of coke up to Ray yesterday. The stand and guage got a make over before we sampled the coke in the afternoon.
A tip was found, glass cleaned & I'm not sure what else Ray did when he disappeared with the guage. Josh gave the base a licking on the surface grinder. The knobs were blackened and the rest polished. I'm very happy with the results and I couldn't have done it to this standard on my own so many thanks to the boys for their help.…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands
