Default DIY stains - artists oils

anyone made thoer own stains using artists oil paints?
apparently the pigments used are very high quality, fade resistant and best of all the colour range is very wide

When I worked in furniture restoration (many moons ago) I used the oils to touch up marks, and they work very well. Most were then sprayed with lacquer - no problems.
The oils do make it pretty easy to colour match..... just mix until you get the right colour!

For staining You would have to mix up a slightly larger batch than you need, but should work fine. Take care putting it on.

The difference between "student grade" and "artist grade" pigments is mostly the particle size.
Some colors are chemical, some colors, the earth tones, are actually ground up earths which
    may have been oven-roasted first.
As it is your intention to make fine furniture, I recommend that you "bite the bullet"
and buy the best artists grade paints that you can find.
Windsor&Newton, daVinci and Grumbacher will not sell you short.

I've used watercolors in those brands for decades. There's an order of magnitude
between the student and professional grades.
