    Default Wooden Helicopter Toy for the grandsons for Christmas

    Wooden Helicopter Toy for the grandsons for Christmas...

    About a month ago on Better Homes & Gardens the "woody presenter" Rob made a couple of these and it was suggested that I should make a couple for the grandsons for Christmas presents.... [350mm x 25mm conduit + 250mm x 8mm dowel + 42x12mm Pine] ....

    I've made a few modifications to the plan;

    I used the 12" disc sander to get the propeller profile before hand sanding...

    I added an end cap and painted the holder...

    I painted the section of the shaft to see the hole for the shoe lace...

    I made the pull handle out of 3/8" dowel....

    But generally to plan and wow, they work well.....these lifted about 1.5mtrs above my head and travels about 12mtrs...

    Only tricky part is threading the end of the shoe lace into the hole and winding up....

    OH, the end of the shoe lace must no protrude the hole in the shaft...otherwise the shaft won't rotate cleanly....

    Good fun, cheers, crowie

    PS - I've already shared the plans with a few mates, so if you want to have a go just "email" me..
    Merry Christmas to all and May your 2015 be filled with good health and lots of shed time making beaut wooden toys....

    Great job Peter, I will have to have a go one day. I remember you could buy a plastic one similar to that when I was a kid. It had a pull cord that used a rack and pinion drive.

    Thank you Dallas.... The rack & pinion drive sounds good as the shoe lace & hole will cause some issue for the 4 & 7.5 yr old.. Peter

    They look great Peter many an hour should be played on these. Can imagine that the parents will spend many an hour having to rewind the string after every flight.
