    It took the local electricity outfit a year to underground the cable..they were so embarassed about the delay that they waived the $2600 charge for running the new cable across the street to the nearest power pole.

    They are cheap because they are maybe 20 years old and have done a hard life in a furniture factory, and anyone setting up a new factory wouldn't want them. But they are (probably) quite accurate and suitably reliable for the duty cycle that we part-timers ask of them. You can buy a new, single phase 13 inch thicknesser for (say) $1000 or a used 20 inch thicknesser for $1000 [IF you have 3-phase]. Some of us would prefer the second alternative. I don't think I would buy a new 3-phase machine for home use if I could get the same machine in single phase, because there is effectively no difference in utility in a home application and the market on resale is less.
