    Default Hercus Colour

Can anyone advise the correct colour for Hercus lathes?

Mine has been repainted a dark green and I would like to return it to the original shade of green. I will be grateful for any help.

    Thanks,
    Arthur

Arthur it depends on what model and year your lathe is there are many different variations varying from grey / blue green , my late model geared head one is hammertone type green

lots were painted in government school colors depending on state

    Thanks John.

From the small sections that aren't covered by dark green paint, my Hercus must have originally been light green in colour; however, I doubt that there is sufficient clear good quality paint to get a colour match.

    Default A Challenging Task !

    Arthur,

John's suggestion of "Wilderness" is about as close as you will get with a standard over the counter colour. Bunnings reckon they can colour match but when I had them try to match the green of my tool and cutter grinder they were sort of close but the colour was too clean compared to the original dirty green. I have three Hercus machines painted green and they all differ.

    John/Bob,

    Many thanks for your posts.

From the photographs, the Bunnings colour matching service is a little approximate. I wonder if a specialist automotive paint supplier would do a better job? (One local auto paint supplier no longer does colour matching having lost a court case when they didn't manage to supply an accurate match.)

I'll buy some "Wilderness" and try it.

The green appears, to me, to be similar to the green used by Myford for their lathes.

    Arthur,

Myford may have used Reseda Green, RAL 6011, an industry standard. Hercus green ( or greens) is different but if you are painting the entire machine, who will know or who will care if it is different?

In my mind the Craftsman is the most beautiful machine Hercus made, I'd love one but I would want it to be its original colour ( or as close to that colour as I could get it. ) I look at my No.O mill and quickly cover it up with a sheet. Some plonker painted most of it sky blue.

just as an aside i went to our local auto paint shop supplier and he suggested use acrylic which they can match pretty close to wilderness,
it come off the gun sort of flat normally in auto spraying it is cut and polished for a shine
a bit more expensive but it goes a long way

    John,

I've used spraying enamel on the Hercus bits and pieces I've painted and on my Waldown drill. It is shiny and Hercus didn't use shiny paint. I've tried and come unstuck with matting agent.

Your suggestion of acrylic may well be the answer.

here is an example of a lathe i built from new old stock parts a few years ago if you look carefully you can see the top above the chip tray is painted with acrylic (but not wilderness it was a modified surplus acrylic stock paint base)
the cabinet which was repainted later is basic hercus green

    Looks very good

One (trivial) thing that would irritate me if I was the owner of this machine would be the yellow splotch on the door and the dribble on the swarf tray.
Look at how much better it looks.

This is the colour match formula (white knight epoxy enamel) based on the inside panel of a Model 0 milling machine, the inside of the panel was in good condition and seemed to be the pretty typical green.
