Goodell Pratt Auger Brace Bit Post Hole Drill

A fellow on eBay is selling this device. I've seen them for sale before, but how does it work?

You fit this "chain drill" to your brace, then fit an auger bit into the chain drill chuck. The chain goes around your post and hooks into the claw on the other side of the chain drill. As you turn the brace, the screw on the chain drill tightens the chain, putting more pressure on the cutter. Some models have manual tightening, this one has automatic tightening.

They can also be used to drill steelwork. A twist drill - with square taper (of course) - is used in the two jaw chuck.

Without referencing my Goodell-Pratt cattledogs, I think some models also come with three-jaw chucks, to allow ordinary twist bits to be used for metal drilling.

Vann has nailed it. The pin sticking out just below the tang would advance the little star wheel, which is engaged with the large castellated drive washer, (terminology?) one tooth per revolution. Particularly useful up a windmill if drilling holes for a new head, where you don't have to try and hang on, crank and push at the same time. Once the hole is bored you release the chain and withdraw the bit.
The worst thing about this model is you have to tediously rewind it before you can bore another hole.
