Something Different!
To use a line from the Monty Python boys "Now for Something Completely Different!"
While I was working on the rocker arm for the Harley Davidson the shape reminded me of an amazing if not impracticable vessel designed by
Ross Winans way back when.
I thought I'd post some information on it along with a couple of other things that may make interesting toys or models.
It's always nice to go and see what's hiding in the long grass out in left field every now and again.
Below is the patent for Winans Spindle Ship filed in 1858.
As you can see it's shaped like a cigar and the propeller rotates around the centre of the ship.
You'd probably think that after giving it some more thought Winans would of left it alone.
But no here it is "AMAZING".
Apart from the Spindle Ship Winans was a very successful engineer.
He built a lot of trains the one below is known as a Crab because it looks like it scuttles sideways!.
The engine was built and as far as I know was very successful.
Although I don't think the working model had the elaborate snakes running up the smoke stack.
You'd reckon it's got Keith's name written all over it!.
This last one would just about have to be my favourite of all time.
Patented in 1896 by Gothold Langer this marvellous creation never saw the light of day as a commercial venture.
Although there is some suggestion that a prototype may have been built.
I'd love to build it myself but at 2/3 scale she'd be a monster.
Anyway like I say someone may find them interesting as potential toys or models.
They certainly would make for something different!.
Cheers
Trev.

I think the original loco is in the Smithsonian. Might be able to build from photos. Thanks Trev.

While the Winans locomotive may have been successful, it would not have steamed all that well as the exhaust steam appears to go up a separate pipe, rather than up the chimney to create a draft for the fire.
