I really wonder about people's obsession with CAPITALS.

    Default mathieson mitre plane

    Hello Ray,

I may be able to help with identifying your plane, I have a copy of the reproduced Mathieson 1899 illustrated price list
and under the heading of Wrought Steel Planes there are two listings for Mitre Planes. # 847 - improved and # 848 - plain.

Yours looks like an # 847, although the front bun is different on yours, but then sometimes what was printed differed from what was produced,
or yours could have been modified because of damage or a better feel and fit in the hand.

This type of plane with its low blade angle was used mainly for planning end grain such as mitre joints or where there was a board with
cranky or reversed grain, that a regular bench plane with its higher angled blade would cause tear out to occur.

    Regards

    Graham.

    Ray,
It is a very early example of Mathieson Mitre Plane.
Yours has a replaced lever screw.
Not many of that pattern are known to exist.
It is a very, very rare plane indeed.
If you google the description of the plane, you will should find pictures of the type you have, but with the original screw.

    Regards,
    Peter
