    Hi Murray and welcome.
Ebay is worth keeping an eye on. Other places to try are old tool sellers both here and overseas. You may strike luck and someone has one in his spare bits box. Google can help too.
A couple of old tool sources in Aus.

The other options are hold out and find another old 778 with a fence or if you have the arm bars you could make a wood fence.
They are a handy plane to have so good luck with the hunt.
    Regards
    John

I was in the same predicament a few years back. I was going to make a wooden fence for my Woden W78. Fortunately Brontehls was able to source a fence that fitted, off a damaged WS A78, so I didn't need to. But from reseach I did at the time:

The rods fitted to a Record 778 are 5/16" diameter, and centred 140mm apart (excuse the mix of metric and imperial). I would suggest you use a piece of hardwood and drill holes 140mm apart, and far enough in from the edge to drill and tap two holes for locking bolts (M4 or M5 threads should do). That should work for a while.
Alternatively glue the rods into the timber fence, and use the locking screws on the 778 body to adjust the fence in and out.

    HTH.

    Cheers, Vann.
