Thanks Stew. I had already made the leather lined tills when I found about the effect of chromium salts tanning on metals.

The leather linings are quite nice to store and retrieve the planes. Rather than throw them away, I figured I would keep an eye on things, as many reports by gun owners, knife enthusiasts etc. suggested rust formed very quickly on chrome salted leather.

However, over the last month, I have seen none.

I suspect this is because the planes go into their tills dry, the case is closed limiting air circulation, and the leather is dry.

Perhaps gun owners etc. are talking about holsters moistened by sweat and the compound effect lets rust run rampant.

Anyway, all is good, so I will leave well enough alone.

I have purchased plane irons from Jim Davey, and sis notice the G15 advertised, so assume my new IBC irons are coated in it. Seems to be effective ... Just not sure where to get it as Jim can't post it.

Have you used it on cast topped machines ?

Cheers !
