Default The non forum sponsor adds - Linked to some central register???

A few weeks ago I got tired of seeing ads for "sleezy single women want you" on FB, so I changed my gender status on FB to female.

The adds in FB changed to weight loss, womens underwear and clothing ads, which I found less offensive.

Now I'm finding the same female related ads appearing in the non-forum adds on the advertising side bar on WWF?

A couple of months back I purchased some workwear shorts from a well known brand and ads for that brand have followed me around like a bad smell.

Is there some central register somewhere that is doing this targeted advertsing?

It all comes down to who/what is tracking your web page visits.
If you're running firefox*, you can stop tracking by installing ghostery.

This doesn't block ads shown on this or any other website.

FWIW, it only shows two trackers on this website, both google.

*Works on lesser web browsers as well

I've had Ghostery and Ad-blocker running for over two weeks now and it has been VERY interesting.

No more ads which is excellent.

What surprises me is that FB does not have any visible trackers running.
Most of the other sites have 3 or 4 trackers running and FB Connect is one of the most common ones
E-Bay only has ~2, Optus and Telstra ~5, and Gumtree ~9
One of the worst appears to be Photobucket with up to 30 trackers running.

I'd be interested to know what others have found out about this.

I use FireFox & the Adblocker plugins.

I have Adblock Edge, Adblock Plus, Adblock Plus Pop-up Addon, & Element Hiding Helper for Adblock Plus.

That gets rid of HEAPS of stuff.

I don't do Facebook. Perhaps I should reconsider!

As Cliff said, suite of adblockers (used with FF or Chrome) will get rid of 99% of ads. That works on FB as well.

I`ve just d/l ghostery & seems to be ok.Currently as i type this it shows only 3: google adsense & analytics & skim links having been scratched.Early days of course but it could be seen as being worthwhile. Checked other forums i follow & was able to rid heaps of trash.
