Saddle lock question
My boys and I are slowly cleaning and oiling our Hercus ARM, an ex tech high school lathe.
We've recently dismantled and cleaned the saddle and apron, both of which had a thick layer of dried oil mixed with swarf.
Anyway, we can't remember how to get the saddle lock clamp block back under the saddle.
The Southbend rebuild booklet doesn't really help.
I've attached some pics of the relevant bits. Any helpful tips welcome.
The saddle clamp block and screw...
Which is supposed to fit under here... But it doesn't.
What is the proper order of reassembly?

If you loosen the holding screws in the top of your carriage going into the saddle you may have enough room to maneuver the locking plate in between the carriage and the bed, you may need to try and jiggle it a fair bit.
If not you will have to remove the 2 screws completely so that you can replace the clamp plate into position.
The rear of the plate fits into a captivated cavity in the carriage casting.
Once you have the clamp in position it wont fall out although it will be loose.
Retighten the 2 screws into the saddle and then whilst holding the clamp plate up with a finger restart the locking bolt into the thread of the clamp.

Cheers for that. I'll take my extra hand out to the shed tonight and see how I go.
I'll report back.

Finally got it in, thanks to pipeclay's advice. Thanks.
Took a few goes, and I had to run a tap through the saddle clamp so I could pick up the thread with the bolt.
Now on to cleaning up the cross slide.
Cheers, Martin
