    Default natural oils for waterproofing?

Hi all, i am about halfway through my bench build and i need to start thinking about waterproofing the bottom of my legs, i need to do this as my bench is in my garage which floods when heavy rain hits.

So i am hoping to get some suggestions on the best oils to use as i want to use a natural product, i have read Tung oil is good, linseed oil use to be the go to etc... any other oils i should be looking at? i know i will need to apply the oil on a regular bases (every few months) and that is ok with me.

the bench is made out of Pine in-case that info is needed.

    looking forward to the responses.

    Regards
    Ben

If you really are looking for natural "Yar, this be getting wet, regular-like" protection, I'd suggest painting it with hot paraffin wax...especially on the end grain!

Thanks splinter, what about if I choose to not go natural? I pretty much just want it on the bottom of the legs, the rest of the bench will not have any finish.

Put gumboots on the bench legs.

For an unnatural solution, 3-5 coats of marine epoxy. That'll keep it (literally) shipshape!

Do something though, to stop the bottoms scraping all the epoxy off the bottom of the legs, like glue on a bit of cork after you've well and truly sealed the legs.

The pure Tung oil will be quite pricy and for the use of the bottom of your bench.

I agree with what Master Splinter had suggested in the use of Epoxy...

How hard will it be to prevent or divert the water?

The water will cover most of the floor, but this happens very little, only during heavy rainfall. would it be more beneficial to attach some rubber feet to the bottoms of the leg?

I get some water coming in when it rains a certain way. The shelves in that area have rubber feet that came with the metal shelves. I think it helps.

    ?
You can buy Sceney's Pure Tung Oil for $20/litre at most Hardware stores. If you want to cut it, White Spirit is cheap and effective.(1:2 ratio oil to spirit).

Is tung oil waterproof? I doubt it. I'd go with rubber/hard plastic/aluminium feet tall enough to keep the timber clear of the water.

Gday Ben6. Whats the dia of the bench legs? Cut-down plastic drink/milk containers slipped over the bottom of the legs. Then gaffer tape wrap for the industrial look!

Dimensions are 87x87mm, by adding / covering the bottom of the legs with feet / material, my options will be pretty unlimited... i will start looking around to see what looks decent.

Thanks everyone who has offered help, much appreciated.

    Check out the local plumber.

Off cuts off 100mm PVC pipe with caps glued on will ensure the bench feet stay dry. As an extra, if you wish, from time to time pour a little linseed into the pipe to soak up in its own time. Using pipe will also allow you to ensure that they are high enough to beat any flooding.
