Very interesting. I assumed it was the old 45° slide sideways trick. It would be a positive lock. All comes down to what application you wish to use it for
Have a watch people. It is actualky different.
I know of other things done with the same principle but was not expecting this one

Interesting trick that joint .
Sorry to bring up a negative about the guy doing the video but I think it should be said .
He's doing the classic bad dumb mistake of how to cut your fingers off on a table saw at the 29 second point.
By crossing the line of the blade to grab the wood after it has passed through.
If I catch any one doing that in my workshop, every thing stops, and we try and figure out why that lesson on how to keep your fingers attached was forgotten .
Its a bad habit to continue and only a matter of time before he finds out the hard way .
His push sticks look to small for my liking as well .

As far as I know the 45 degree slide version is the original and this one with drilling out and steam bending etc is something I have seen before from people trying to recreate the original puzzle but have not "got it". I did not think this one was even particularly good.
Cheers

Agreed execution and finish was not there but I give him credit for trying and thinking outside the box

If he soaked it well in hot water for a while, he could have squeezed the whole lot down like on the Impossible Nail trick.
It would have saved the whole drilling and weakening thing.

Cute trick for bamboozling the natives but ultimately useless. What could such a 'joint' support, unless of course it was filled with epoxy.
Innovations are those useful things that, by dint of chance, manage to survive the stupidity and destructive tendencies inherent in human nature.

the double dovetail makes an attractive joint in a rail
as to loading. For most furniture scale work and also much post and beam construction, the sections used are far heavier than what is required to carry the design load.regards from Alberta, Canada
