    Default Golden Hind Blueprints.

I've been working on a lot of blueprints lately.
Mostly of J.A.P Engines getting to know their layout before taking on the 2/3 scale model of the Brough Superior.

By chance Joel aka shedbound had happened across some blueprints for a model of the Golden Hind.
He posted them on the forum and they got my attention very quick smart.

They where printed by a Gentleman none as Captain James, he had a hobby and model shop in Melbourne for many years starting in 1932.
His store went by the name of The Model Dockyard it was first located in Flinders Street, then moved to 169 Elizabeth Street around 1934.
Then it finally shifted to 216-218 Swanston Street were it was until the late 70's I believe.

The plans of the Golden Hind look to be very old probably from around the late 30's to early 40's.
I mentioned to Joel that I'd love to have a go at redrawing the blueprints at some point, and he was nice enough to post them to me.

To say their in a poor state would be an understatement, but there's enough clarity left for me to redo them.

There's three sheets of plans each one just smaller than A2.

I couldn't wait to get started so after scanning them I isolated a section for the third sheet and got to work on it.
I'm pretty happy with the way things are looking.
Although I've made it a little harder on myself by deciding to redraw them as close to original as I can.
If it was a blueprint of an engine I could flip parts left and right as a draw them.
It makes things very easy, but the Golden Hind drawings were very much done by hand.
So each part will need to be done pixel by pixel.

As you can see things like the windows weren't drawn one to the other.
This one section took around 20 hours to do, so it may take some time to get it all done!.
But the plans are Beautiful and I'm really looking forward to seeing them more the way they where.

It will be great to get back to working on things like the Harley and Brough.
But with everything packed up waiting to move the Blueprints make an easier option at the moment.

If anyone has any information about Captain James and The Model Dockyard I'd love to hear it.

Hopefully when the Blueprints for the boat are done someone may like to have a go at building it.
I'd like to but knowing me it would end up a little to large for the mantelpiece in my new house!.

    Cheers
    Trev.

    Default Model Dockyard

As a kid I remember the Model Dockyard in Swanston Street.
The store was split level. The top floor was model railways (my interest) and I think downstairs were other models, kits, boats and planes.

I've been working on the third sheet of the Golden Hind blueprints pretty much every waking moment for over a week.
I know it would be time consuming but with well over a hundred hours put into it I've only finished a little more half of the sheet.

Keeping the hand written font is the big killer.
Each word takes so long to redraw then isolate from the back ground.
But I'm happy to do it as I don't think the finish would have nearly as much character without it.
Hopefully another week should see the sheet finished.
Then only two more to do.

    Cheers
    Trev.

Here is a German gun that James captured in WWI. He also earned a Military Cross.

Thanks so much for the information on Captain James.
What a man makes the work I'm doing on the Blueprints even more rewarding.
If you find anything else it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Mate

A little over two hundred hours and Sheet Three is finished.
I've just got back from getting it printed out at A3 to have a good look at the result.
It looks really good so a poster size A2 will be printed this afternoon.

I did Sheet Three first as it appeared to have the most damage and with all of the individual images be the hardest to do.
I think I'm working on Granddad's old motto of Do The Hard Part First Then The Rest Should Fall In Line.
    Hopefully he's right!.

I'll get the poster print and the original posted back to Joel before starting on Sheet One.
Well before starting the next sheet of The Golden Hind what I really need to do is finish the 250cc J.A.P Blueprint I was working on.
I dropped it like a hot scone the minute Joel's blueprints arrived "Typical".

    Cheers
    Trev.

Amazing, work Trev, as usual. as has been said that certainly is patience, you would have done the original drawer proud I'm sure. No hurry to get them back.

I got Sheet One finished this morning.
Reckon it's come up pretty well.

Not to bad considering the condition of the original.

I've only got Sheet Two to do which is the rigging.
It's either light I can see at the end of the tunnel or just severe eye strain "maybe both".

    Cheers
    Trev.
