My mate restores old timber bridges. Only uses auger bits, admittedly power driven I drilled every hole in hardwood posts on my property with an auger bit, hand driven

I had to drill 1" holes in the end of a green Jarrah stump to pin an anvil and started with a spade bit in the electric drill, hopeless. I used a brace and scotch bit to finish the job.

A friend said that years ago his father mounted a Villiers engine with a flexible drive to a auger for boring posts, you only had to touch it to the post and it would rip through. One day when he was about 16 he caught his trousers on the bit and it tore them to shreds, luckily with no injuries to him, but when his mother saw what had happened she banned him and his brother from ever using "that contraption" again. So it was back to the old brace and bit.

I found a patent (US 504018) from 1893 by a William Caldwell of Coolamon NSW for an improved lead screw, I wonder if that ever made it into production?
Sorry can't work out how to attach the patent diagram.....Paul help!

    Cheers,
    Geoff.
