    Default 2 new pieces

    The first one is called The Geisha, and I had a bit of fun with the border. In this case, the border is supposed to look like 4 planks dovetailed together. I carried the pattern around the edges, and reproduced it on the back. The corner protectors were supposed to add to the illusion. Quite happy with the result. The size is 350mm x 350mm

    The second one is The Dancer. Skot did this as a scrollsaw portrait, based on a photograph that his wife took. I was very fortunate that she graciously allowed me to use the image. I hope that I did her justice, but admit that the very fine facial features nearly did me in. I work from the back of the piece, and it was a pleasant surprise to find that the fine stuff had actually come out on the face (sometimes they don't). The size is 430mm x 300mm.

    Nice work Chris. I think this style works well in marquetry and these are fine examples.

    Yes, I like them too. Very impressed.

    I love minimalism.

    A few details about how you did them would be good.

    Cheers

    Hi Arron, these are knife cut using the widow method, with all cutting from the reverse side. I usually mount onto 12mm mdf, but wanted these to be thicker. They are mounted onto 18mm laminated pine, from Bunnings, which gives them the thickness without the weight penalty of thicker mdf. I don't how this will be long term, but time will tell all.

    Thanks Chris.
    You certainly have the tight curves with scalpal thing sorted out.

    Default 2 more questions

    Couple more questions occured to me;

    What scalpel blade do you use?

    And did you dye the red timber yourself? If so how?

    Cheers

    10A or 11 scalpel blades, or craft knife blades from Bunnings. I am no longer very fussy. The 'Red' is not as red as it came out in the photo, but is natural veneer, and has not been dyed.

    Default Update

    I entered these into the Royal Melbourne Show Wood Inlay / Marquetry (Craft
    Competition\Marquetry). Got first (Blue Ribbon) for The Dancer, and third for The Geisha. So am absolutely stoked, particularly as I got the blue ribbon last year also for another black on light piece.
