What pine to use for framing outdoor sauna?
Hi All,
I'm deciding on what pine to use for framing outdoor sauna.
So far:
1. Untreated: Although framing will be fully covered with foil insulation, I'm inclined to use untreated pine because the foil might get damaged, and I don't want to breathe poison of treated pine. The sauna will be built in such a way that I can take it apart any time, so I don't worry about termites as the construction is small and it will be very easy to inspect around perimeter. I do worry about rotting due to condensation though, however not a problem if it's going to be OK for 5-8 years.
2. H2 - no protection against rotting, only termites. As I don't worry about termites, nothing to gain for me from using H2.
3. H3 - this will protect against rotting, but at what price? To sit in the sauna and know there is a lot of chemicals in the walls and they might leak?
What would you recommend?
Thanks,
Tommy

Having just come back from Northern Europe, and experiencing the Sauna rituals, I would definitely stay away from any treated timber.
From memory, they used cedar, birch and possibly fir in the saunas. I am unsure what species were used, but it would have to tolerate high temperature and humidity.
I am sure that others with a greater knowledge in this area will chime in and advise you accordingly.

Thanks for your recommendation! I see you understand why I want to build it Everything internal is going to be untreated - western red cedar for internal lining and untreated pine for battens. I'm trying to decide on what to use for framing which is going to be fully concealed by foil insulation inside. But still, I would prefer to use untreated even for framing if possible.

Tommy-I just used standard pine.90mm plates,70mm studs in a staggered pattern @ 300centres.
I then run the foil backed wool (normally used on roofs) in a wave pattern. This gives ultimate insulation value instead of just pacing batts in between studs.
Ours was built as a prefab, so I could take it to site and assembled. We also placed it on stumps so to avoid the potential termite issues.
Good Luck!

Hi Cool Runnings, thanks a lot for your reply!
How is your experience with your sauna?
This is an interesting idea! What depth of foil wool did you use? I understand it was more than 20mm and was just squashed around the stud??
Do you have pictures of your build progress posted for open access?
Thanks,
Tommy.

Hi Tommy-You can see pics for some more clarity. Try and keep the floor area as compact as possible.
I used on this one in fact inline studs, but same sizings as mentioned previously.
Foilboard/Polyester insulaton was then utilised.0mm battens fixed to studs in a horizontal fashion with a breathable foil wrap.
By all means, use some adjustable vents located at the door and midway up n the back wall.
Double glaze windows (if any).More detail spent on insulation will save later on in power consumption.
Regards.
