Hercus Surface Grinder. Serial Number location?
I have acquired this most wonderful machine!
It is Hercus of course, and it is set up as a surface grinder. It has been re-painted.
Did they make such a machine, or is it a Tool and Cutter grinder that has been re-configured? It came from a Tech. School (TAFE).
I could not find a serial number, but I am sure it has one - being a Hercus. Any suggestions on the location would be welcome.

Did you just buy this, or are you selling it? I saw it on gumtree with a nice little shaper from the same seller.

What you have is a No.3 T&C. The 3 was superseded by the 3A which featured a ball bearing mounted table but remained very similar in appearance to the 3. I think production of the 3 commenced in the late 1940's. I had a 3 but it was worn out. It has been replaced with a wonderful No.1.
Here are a few links that may be of interest regarding the No.3 -

AJ,
It is a No.3. The 3A and the No.1 shared the same ball bearing supported table. The older 3 has vee ways and not the effortless traverse of the youngsters.

hERCUS T/C GRINDER SERIAL NUMBER.
AJ.
I have a #3 grinder the same vintage as yours.
The only number I have found is stamped on the top of the vertical travel dovetail.
If you retract the cross slide and look down toward the column it may be there.
The number stamped on my grinder is 13.
I have had my grinder for a number of years. Cross slide needs refacing/scraping
but otherwise good for age. Handy tool for cutter refurbishing.
