Default Well Used Disston Panel Saw

I found this well-used 21", 10 PPI Disston panel saw in my basement (not sure when I got it). It's been cut down many times, as can be seen. The Disston etch is partially visible, but some of it is cut off at the bottom. I'm just curious which saw this might be. The etch has the wider margin (the older style), and the medallion is the 1896-1917 style.

    Thanks for your opinions,
    Dave

The handle style and skewed back would suggest it's a D8.

Yep. Definitely a D8 and you nailed it on timeframe. Pretty run of the mill otherwise. It's a shorter length than most of the D8s that you find, which makes it somewhat unique.

Sorry, I just saw that you said it had been "cut down". Are you referring to how much of the blade is gone due to sharpening?

Sometimes old saws will actually have a couple of inches (or more) cut off of the end of the saw plate. Given that this saw's etch is still in the middle of the saw plate, I would guess that this saw is at its full length minus ~1" which has been lost following sharpening. It was likely 22" (a common panel saw size) to begin with.

Yes. I guessed it was nothing too unique, but I always like to know what I have. I knew you guys would know what it was right off.

    Thanks.
