    Default New Woodworking Award

When I was a youngster in the Army the Q Store blokes at one unit instituted an award. The winner was required to leave on his desk for a week a large, beautifully and intricately carved and polished wooden phallus. It was the D1ckhe@d of the Week Award. When I first saw it the award was on the desk of the Quartermaster.

I have decided that this award should now be instituted for woodies. The inaugural winner is ... drum roll ... me.

Was veneering over MDF for a new cabinet. Each side was two veneers taped together. I took the finished panel out of the vacuum press but as I went to remove the tape holding the veneers together it became apparent that there was tape on one side of the panel only. The tape for the other sided was glued firmly between the veneer and the MDF.

Bugger! Thankfully the 80 grit paper on the drum sander had that veneer ... and tape ... off pretty quickly and the newly veneered panel has just come out of the press, so no disaster ... only a D1ckhe@d of the Week Award.

Any volunteers to create a judging panel for future awards?

Ok, I agree (with reinstating the award).

So where's the pic of the inaugural, although reinstated, award on your bench?

Nice recovery - which is what counts...

If you make a mistake then fix it, then it's not a mistake!

That said, yes, we should have an award for this, because I would give you a serious run for your money!

Sorry buddy, but if I'm in this race, then just forget about any chance of ever getting a weekly nod.

Akshally, you can make it "daily" if you like, and I'll still take you out.

Last Thursday I made 6 dovetail drawers 859 deep instead of 859 wide. i.e the dovetails were showing on the front of the drawer box. Oops!
I reckon I win this week.

I know a guy who just ruined a beautiful turned scoop that needs more shed time.
He could make the trophy and probably keep it for the first week on his bench before bringing to Sydney and presenting it to me for the week.

    Pete - laughing head off

Anyone travelling through Moyhu in Victoria oughta drop into the pub. They have a pretty good example carved in timber that is the bottle opener.

Best story I have is sending a table out to be polished and upon its return discovering that he'd sprayed right over some masking tape.

    Pete,

When I think of the time taken to make six dovetailed drawers my eyes water. You are in the lead for this week.

I would have glued a veneer over the fronts of the drawers.

    Pete.

The funny part (for me) was I found out that dad did them wrong.
Usually goes the other way around.

I'm not letting him forget about this mishap for a long time.

    Dirk.

So, you will actually, eventually let him forget?

Good to see you here Dirk.
