    Thank for the link. I have some brass darkening solution and I have experimented with it in the past. I have now tended to shy away from it as I think it is only useful in some instances.

    I believe you can only use this successfully on a very smooth saw plate albeit with a faint etch.

    The reason for this is that the darkening solution follows the hollows. Be that the etch or any other imperfection. When the darkening solution has been sanded off the high spots the "enhanced" surfaces remain, which will include any grainy or pitted spots within the treated area.

    I often see saws for sale and the whole etch region is dark compared to the remainder of the saw plate. I immediately know what has happened.

    I also, like you, have gone completely away from electrolysis as a method for cleaning saw plates. I produces a very unsatisfactory dull grey look.
