Yes please! Can you store it for me until I can bring the boat over to collect it? How is it that your side of the rock keeps turning up this stuff, yet here where a fair bit of stuff was made at one time, things like this seem to be very few and far between?

I have never seen or heard of 'Shepherd, Hill & Co, but Grace's Guide has, and has this to say:

"of Union Foundry, Ingham Street, Hunslet, Leeds
Drilling machine on display at Armley Mill Museum

Large lathe displayed at the Canadian Museum of Making."

    Thanks for posting Vann.

Yes I agree (I thought I'd do it later - as it was past my bedtime when I loaded the link). Anyways... here's pictures of the second one...

I'll go 'round and stick a postage stamp in the top, right hand corner for you...

But seriously, I think it's because we're about as far from "Mother England" as you can get, making getting replacement gear a little difficult, and I still remember as a kid (1960s), the shortage of 'overseas funds' necessary to buy anything new from overseas (you couldn't buy a new car unless a percentage of the payment came from overseas - we had an amazing fleet of old cars here in the "60s"). Also there was no market for scrap until the Japaneese came buying about the same time. It's a different story these days, what with China and Taiwan just up the road making lots of cheap stuff, and all our industry going offshore... We're probably looking at the end of this old gear.

    Cheers, Vann.

It was probably the War years and all the recycling to turn it into Guns and Bombs that took it.

Where did / does the UK get all its Iron ore from ? Does it buy it in as Iron Ore, or mine its own ?

These were the only 2 lathes of any size at the M.O.M.
There is another with a sliding bed but it's Canadian made.
The larger of these has a 25 hp motor which via the chains up the wall behind it drive all the line shafting in the museum.

Vann, You call yourself a drill collector…..well what are you waiting for?? If you don't drag that big sucker home you had better turn in your membership and hand over your drills.

Hmmm... they're both in Hawkes Bay - about a 4 hour run each way, so that's do-able. But once I get them here I'll have to put either the Wadkin tablesaw, or the Preston bandsaw, out in the rain - and that's not going to happen .

Nope. I posted for your interest - nothing more. I've got more drills than I'll ever need (even if all but one are hand-cranked ).
