Union X-5
As well as some ridiculously large drill bits, I picked this up as an item of interesting design.
Union X-5 ... vertical post adjuster ... basically zero backlash ... drop-in lever-cap design.

Noice looking plane, Paul - I especially like the low, wide, & flat-topped front knob, I made similar knobs for all my bench planes, after using an old #4 which had the 'low' knob. I can't fathom why they ever went away from that style, imo, they are far nicer to use than those skinny, round-topped things that snuck in sometime in the 20s...

I think someone proposed that it used less wood to create.
I'm cynical enough to be 50% afraid that that could actually be the answer. (or a contribution)
