Yes Bunya, the Woden 78s always had the wooden (or was it Woden) front handle.
It was included along with the twin arms as a range of "improvements" on the Stanley 78.
Thanks to the nice link from Paul, lots of background info here:

The precursor of the Woden is thought to be the WS

Tha Anant A78 is a carbon copy of the Woden, complete with wooden knob. If someone really wants a knob for their plane they'll probably sell it as a spare part.

The wood handle should be original. My WS has one. They were the company before Wodan and after that Record took over. I dont think record persisted with the handle. I do think the handle is a good feature and makes the plane easier to work with.

PS I did not notice the last 3 posts on page 2 before posting this. Some good research and info.

Nice example there!
Record took the W78 and turned it into the 778.
They kept the twin arms, dropped the front knob and changed the blade depth adjuster from a lever to a screw type. I have a 778 but it is missing a depth stop. It came with a Stanley depth stop but it doesn't quite fit.

Dave,
I could knock out a quick handle on the lathe as I have one to copy from. If you end up with that plane and want a handle let me know. Wont be beech or rosewood however.

I actually claim to do some turning though it has been a while. Its possible Paul was talking tongue-in-cheek to which i replied.
However, that being said, you could probably turn one up much closer to original than I as you have a 'hard copy'
I'll let you know if I end u with it
