The cot
I am moving on to my next item for the Christmas giveaway. This one is a cot that I designed and have made a few of in the past. They are pretty simple to make with the main difficulty laying out the slats and holding during gluing. For this I made up some jigs which will be seen later in the build.
So far I have cut out all the components and done the shaping where required to make 5 cots.
Sketchup cot.JPG This is the design I am working to.
After ripping all the timber to size they are docked to length using the sled on the tablesaw. Makes it quick when you have got lots of slats to cut.
Edging.jpg Grooving.jpgAll the edges of the slats are radiused and the grooves cut in the rails on the router table.
Routing-curve.jpg The radius on the top of the bedhead and base were cut roughly on the bandsaw and then attached temporarily to a template. A pattern bit was then used to clean them up.
Prepared.jpg These are all the parts ready for assembly.
That's it for now.Last edited by Treecycle; 7th October 2015 at 09:05 PM. Reason: Remove photo

I'm with you there Derek. I tend to use the one in the table the most, but handy to have the others.
Battery drills are another "must have lots of" item.

G'Day Dallas,
You are certainly going to bring some huge smiles to a good number of children again the Christmas...
Especially some little ladies with these cots...Very well done, sir....
Cheers, Peter

I have done a bit more in the past few days. I have assembled the sides using the jig to keep the slats evenly spaced. It's hard to see from the photo but there are spacers between each slat to keep them in the correct position.
Sides-jig.jpg
An array of jigs is used to hold the sides square and vertical to help fitting the ends on. These are glued and screwed on, then the holes filled so that when painted they will not show.
End-fitting.jpg
The ends were fitted and holes filled tonight, but no photos yet.Dallas

Finished
My wife finally had a chance to do her bit on the bedding for the cots and now they are all finished ready for our club breakup on the 7th of December, which is when we collect all the toys for charity.
Now to get our Exhibition out of the way next weekend and the year is virtually finished.
