    Default Turning Brass.

    Hi All,
A Lady has asked for some Brass Tipped Tapestry Weavers Bobbins.
Have had a go today. Very interesting Turning Brass in your Wood Lathe. Mainly used a 24mm. Skew.
So the Brass is just on 2in.-50mm.. Drilled a short hole in the centre, for the Tailstock, using a Jacobs chuck, & had to take the 7.25mm. Brass down to 11/64ths. Close to 4mm. 5/8th. long.
Glued it into the Desert Ash Wood, brought the Tailstock up to the small hole, & Turned it down to a Point.
I surprised myself, as I managed some very fine 4in. Shavings, from the Brass & surprise, surprise I turned the SPEED DOWN, not like me at all.
    1 down 5 to go.
Hard part will be working out a price for them, any advice ???.
    Regards,
    issatree.

Time and materials. You can calculate your per hour charge by back figuring what you get for your regular items. X hours to make a run of tops, you get X dollars for the set, divide dollars by hours to get the hourly rate. Add material cost.

If something is on the market close to what you are making, start with that price and add for higher quality and one of a kind. Fine quality and uniqueness demand a high price.
So much timber, so little time.

Issa, a word of caution about turning brass. It is the nastiest crap you can get in your eye or your fingers as it is extremely hard to find, sort of hides with the blood.

The way I work out cost, is to work out the time taken, X $ per hour you'd like, plus material cost + % mark up, equals total cost, divide that by the quantity equals $ unit price. Don't forget to add on any workshop supplies, glues, sanding medium, finishes.

    Default Payment & Brass.

    Hi to you all,
Thank you for all your replies.

Well in the end I just took a stab. Hopefully, she will accept the price of $18ea.

Crocy, yes, I found out about the very fine slithers entering my fingers, but luckily I had good lighting, so I could get them out, but they do sting for awhile.

I have decided to do part of the Brass on the Metal Lathe ( Myford M8 ), at Our Mens Shed so I think maybe that will be a little easier. I will then use the Skew to finish them.
