    So, since you asked to see some of the NZ blackwood Mapleman, here are some pictures of how I cut two flitches freehand out of a windfall in my woodlot. Freehand, that is, with a piece of 4x1 as a visual guide. One slab is about 50-60mm, the other 150-160mm, for turning into some quartersawn sticks.

    What's left of the log I'm going to separate from stump and head and then cut into it through the centre at 90 degrees from the existing cut, hopefully getting a bit more
    quartersawn timber in the process.
