    Default Ladder

I need to build a ladder as I can't find one to suit the situation it will be in. Has anyone got any idea of what timber is used on ladders? It will live outdoors permanently fixed to the external wall of my workshop and will be used to access the roof.

Spotted gum. Just make sure it is all straight grained. Sloping grain will break under strain

Chris, it very much depends upon who will be using the ladder. If it is only you then pick from the reliable timbers listed by Keith Bootle, or from the experts at Western Ladders "All ladders are clear varnish finished and hand crafted using premium grade Oregon stiles and Karri rungs for optimum strength and durablility."

If others may use it then you have an obligation as the owner of the property to comply with the Building Code of Australia and the various safety regulations and Australian Standards for ladder access (AS1657-2013) etc. Timber ladders are still used in specialist applications however they require an inspection regime to ensure they remain serviceable and safe.

    Hope these links may assist,

This might be useful...although I'm not sure that I'd leave a timber ladder outside in the weather.

Aluminum and being outdoors it will need to comply with all regulations.
It is illegal to leave a ladder in a permanent fixed position unless there is a lockable access panel to prevent unauthorized access.
Suggest you contact your insurance company re liability.

    Hi Chris

Given the huge range of ladders available, if you can't find one that suits your situation here http://baileyladders.com.au/product-selector then can I suggest that your application is one where a ladder is not suitable
    regards from Alberta, Canada

I have thought about that but will have to cut three or four rungs out of the top of it to give me hand holds above the roof line. I am not getting any younger and getting off and on the ladder is the most dangerous part as I see it so I want hand holds built in so to speak. I am going to permanently fix it to the wall of the shed so I can pull out the base when I need it which is about once a week.

Yes, I was aware of that and it is simple to implement.
