    Default Female Spurwood

Recently, someone mentioned to me a timber called "Female Spurwood". They were not referring to Dysoxylum pettigrewianum, as this guy knew his timber trees from around the area (there were plenty of Spurwoods/Spur Mahogany - D. pettigrewianum around).

Can anyone tell me then what Female Spurwood is please?

By the way, this timber is from around the Mission beach area in north Queensland - wet rainforest on basalt soil.

    Cheers

It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

I know this was a while ago but it has been bugging me.
I was chatting with my cabinetmaker/sawmiller friend up in Tully today and mentioned this.
He told me all spurwoor aka red spur mahogany is female and this person was pulling your leg.
Maybe, he said, he called it that because spurwood grown at Mission beach, owing to the conditions in the area, is much more knotty than in the Tully area where it grows straight up and the trunk stays clean and smooth.
