    Default WIP: Jewellery box

    Somewhat inspired by Wood Borer's jewellery boxes, i thought I'd post my progress on one of Roger Gifkin's designs. I also needed to use up the timber I bought at last years WWW show.

    The frame is Cooba , the top insert Camphor and the side are Yellow Carabeen (I think). It's kept me busy for a couplke of days and tonight I cut the tenons in the top sides. It just needs a final trim once it's all glued up. I also have to shape the front rail on the lid.

    So far, so good and for me, no mistakes yet! That's a first

    My wife says it smells nice.

    Cooba = Acacia salicina

    It has a magnificent grain pattern. On one internet site I looked it up on it says "burns slow and hot" :eek: The idea of burning this timber just makes me cringe

    And if the cap fits......

    Now that the cricket is finished, maybe the box will be too.

    I want to see what you do with that piece of Silky Oak.

    Isn't Cooba what Zed is searching for?

    LOL, how true. The silky is destined to be my next box top. Might go well with the blackwood

    To quote someone famous "don't ya just love Gifkins" - look'n really good Gumby. Follow his instructions very carefully for setting in the hinges - took me about an hour for each box but well worth it for the result. I carved the rebate out checking it with a very sharp chisel then gently whittling out the remainder with a small razor type knife. What finish are you going to use? Your idea of using a blackwood to frame the silky oak will come up a treat . I have a similar but opposite idea for a box with the panel being Tiger Myrtle framed with silky oak. The TM is two years old now from a woodshow - had the lump of TM next to the bed for months and SWMBO kept taking it away - current compromise I see it in the walk in robe each day till I get to it. Look forward to the finish of your box to see the wood grain. Who is the box for? Nosey aren't I ?

    Cheers

    My usual Hard Shellac and some EEE but maybe this time I'll put some Trad Wax on too.

    OK, make the practice one out of good timber & then make the good one out of practice timber.... we'll beat Mr. Murphy one way or another.
