    Question Bandsaw Wheels

I am currently in the process of cleaning up an old Hyco bandsaw that I was given. The only thing that needs to be replaced is the rubber on the bandsaws. I have seen bandsaw wheels redone just using rubber sheeting glued on with contact adhesive and then shaped by hand, which I think I would like to have a go at.

What I would like to know is what particular type of rubber sheet should I get to redo the wheels? Any sensible suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks
Have a nice day - Cheers

I've read of bicycle inner tubes being used on shop-made bandsaws.
Presumably split down the centre and with the valve removed.
How long they last I can't attest to.

    Hi Rowan,
They have a slight crown on them ....I think. The only work I've done on any is scrape the build up of dust and sap etc, by freewheeling the wheel (NOT driven!!) and apply an old chisel as a scraper. Don't know how it would go removing rubber to shape it, but the join itself can be a problem.
Why can't you find some genuine stuff, maybe its sold per metre?

    Cheers,

In answer to your question I would have two concerns.

Cutting it out of rubber sheet there would naturaly be a join and that may be a problem. Making it stay stuck.

Also rubber sheeting I have used in the past has a kind of canvas through the middle which may make it difficult to shape. If thats what you meant.

Pehaps a generic bandsaw tyre of the same diameter would be the way to go.

On old car tube makes a good bandsaw tyre.
Cut it on an angle so it will stretch on the bandsaw wheel.
For a real big bandsaw you could use a truck or tractor tube.

The curve is usually part of the wheel not the tyre.

    - It was worth asking

Andy - Went to Clark Rubber, but the problem was that they have so many diferent types of rubber and no-one there could say for certain which type was the best.

Duckman & Echinda - Is an option I thought of, but how long would the rubber last being streched like that???

Greolt - The bandsaw I saw done had the joint scarfed and glued with contact cement. Apparently been going for 5 years now and not a problem. And you can still get reinforced rubber 'insertion' sheet.

I can get replacement tyres but they will cost about $40 / pair. Rubber sheet is a lot cheaper and anything that saves money which I can spend on other tools is worth trying.
Have a nice day - Cheers

I can't say from personal experience but I would be very surprised if you couldn't get a bike tube that was only slightly smaller than your bandsaw pulley and so the stretch wouldn't need to be that great. Consider also that when inflated, bike tubes do stretch a bit and stay that way for the whole of their service life.

    Default Bandsaw Tyres

    Rowan,
I suspect your saw is probably a Dyco. If this is the case the tyres are available from the factory here in New Zealand.

Rhys, the bandsaw is a Hyco.

Dyco was made in NZ - Hyco was an Oz creation.

Only $40 for a pair of proper tyres, why bother mucking about?

Some people just enjoy mucking about. So why not?

I probably wouldn't in this instance but I can understand if someone wants to.

    Give it a go.
