    Default Spalted walnut

Little box I made using walnut for the sides and spalted walnut for the top. Corners mitred and splined. Enjoy [emoji16]

Lovely box, Jacques! Very crisp mitre keys and joints. Love the spalted walnut - where do you find these timbers? What finish did you use?

    Regards,

    Thanks Brian.

There is a guy in Matamata that has about 20 shipping containers on his property full of all sorts. When I was there last I asked him about spalted timber and he pointed me to some rotting walnut stumps lying around under the trees and said help yourself to some. I grabbed one that looked half decent, dried it a few weeks in the garage then sliced it up. It's has some softer pieces which I stabilise with glue but overall I got a few nice pieces from it.

I can't remember the finish I used, probably some Danish oil. I sort of alternate between Danish oil, linseed oil, Polyx oil and wax.

    Cheers

By the way, the hinges on this box is the small solid brass ones I get off aliexpress. They are about NZ$20 for 20 hinges so very affordable for run of the kill boxes like these.

Your friend at Matamata didn't get all the leftovers from rebuilding Hobbiton did he?
