Okay, so this may be a dumb question...what's a ships saw? It looks like a bandsaw where the blade tilts instead of the table. But why?

A ships saw is able to cut the rolling bevels on a ships timbers... for example such timbers as the stem as it turns from the keel the bevel changes this saw allows a builder to cut the bevel by rotating the saw rather than the timber... a ship with large timbers (say 35ft + )needs a saw that rotates to the bevels required as the builder is often working alone (as in Peter the builder of this one who utilizes his missus's help as needed but most he does alone) some of the timbers can be very heavy large and or awkward to handle in a usual bandsaw to gain the angles required... so a shipsaw allows that builder to cut the rolling bevels with minimal stain ...comparitively
Very rare creature nowadays... although ive seen in Carbetecs latest cattledog that they have a very small one 10in I believe... Peters is made of ply and junk and has proven itself for his build (a rendition of an English Pilot boat around 40ft if my memorys right)Believe me there IS life beyond marriage!!!
