    Default Lightest prettiest Aussie timber?

Im about to embark on another project this time for one of my neices whos getting married in a few months... this girl loves timber so the wood will be left "raw" so to speak so the grain shows through... she however lives on the other side of Aussie to me and a roadtrip ISNT on the agenda for either of us for some time to come so it will need to be packed and sent to her... she has given me a list of things she would like and left it to me to decide present thinking is a sidetable for the hallway... not to large not to heavy sort of thing reletively easily put together and packaged but enough room to do a bit of fancy stuff you know? But that may change depending on several factors this being the first

So Im wondering what you mob consider to be the prettiest if not the most stunning Aussie timber that is also light weight? Ive got shyteloads of Jarrah Sheoak Tuart Wandoo and Karri along with the exotics from overseas... but she wants something intrinsically Australian and all the Aussie timbers I have are bloody heavy nothing light weight

Anyone think of anything of the top of their heads?
    Cheers!

ooh yeah I thought of Huon too... but I dont have any of that left And Im a bit on the worried side as to cost of Huon to buy what I need

Off the top of my head? Apart from dandruff, Australian Red Cedar comes to mind.

    Hi Wild Dingo,
If you want light weight and beauty, I don't think you can go past red cedar. I don't know about availability over there. Only downside is it doesn't take knocks too well, dents and scratches unless well packaged, which may be an issue with transport. But can be absolutely stunning with the right grain (crotch wood) and high polish.
As an aussie icon, it was known as red gold and helped the early settlers get established by shipping it "back home". It must have been nice to sink an axe into compared to Eucalypt...that was until it was logged out!

Prettiest has to be sheoak or hairy oak, but they are not light, unless in a veneer state

Myrtle would be my next suggestion, followed by Sassafras and yep, Huon

    cheers

    Hey Dingo,

Give Mike and Sandra Berwick a call at Misan Timbers on 08 9739 1985 or at www.misancraftwood.com. They're in Lake Clifton and source Tassie timber such as huon and sassafrass (how many 'esses?).

    Really nice people.

    Best of luck!

Silky Oak (Grevillea robusta) is the go! Australian, light weight, different light colour and beautiful grain. Well worth thinking about!

you've got plenty of that over there ain't ya? relatively light and looks very Oz with all of its gum veins and general greyness in colour.

Silky Oak or Red Cedar for my two bobs worth,
but would lean more towards good quality Silky.

So lets see the choices so far are...

Silky Oak... different to SheOak Im guessin cause Sheoak is heavy
Red Cedar... week doesnt take knocks too well but stunning aim for the crotch
    Myrtle
    Sassafrass
    Huon
    Flooded Gum
    King Billy Pine

Marri... Have you ever held a peice of Marri martrix? Its NOT what Id call light... lighter than Jarrah and Karri sure but still not light... but yeah okay thats an option cheers

Most seeming to favor the Silky Oak, Red Cedar or Sassafrass

Contact Mike an Sandra at Misan Timbers

How we going? I reckon were about done... unless someone else can think of something weve missed?
    Cheers

    Default Silky Oak

    G'day Dingo

I reckon ya can't go wrong with the Silky.
Nice color and a bit denser than the cedar.
Not to heavy, so it ain't going to cost ya a fortune to ship over to this end of Australia.
Have a look at Wongo's desk that he has just finish
    Cheers
