    Default Help identify this gum

I am trying to identify what I suspect is a gum. I was given several 4x4 rafters (each about 4m) and have little idea what they are. It does not seem as figured or as dark as red gum, but I have not seen much of this to know. Blue gum?

The timber is hard, no doubting that. I have turned some for chisel handles and it takes a pounding.

It is an open grain light timber with a light pinkish hue. Although the images show a variation in colours, in reality it is la little ess that this.

There is a similarity in grain to Blackbutt, but this stuff has a (very soft) pinkish hue that BB does not have.

An old bloke from Pemberton gave me a bit about 3 years ago & it is in a shed about a 100k from here so I can't check.
It had that same pinkish stripe through it.
I think (not sure) he might have called it Grey Box but I just looked it up & there are 9 different things called Grey Box.

    Grey Box Eucalyptus brownii
    Grey Box Eucalyptus hemiphloia
    Grey Box Eucalyptus microcarpa
    Grey Box Eucalyptus moluccana
    Grey Box Eucalyptus normantonensis
    Grey Box Eucalyptus quadrangulata
    Grey Box Eucalyptus rummeryi
    Grey Box Eucalyptus tectifica
    Grey Box Eucalyptus woollsiana

BTW, nice job on the mallet. What is the head?
    Cliff.

Thanks Cliff, I'll look up Grey Box.

I made the mallet yesterday, another of several made to date for adjusting woodies. Jarrah head with wedged through tenon.

Could be Brush Box that has a Salmony sort of tone to it. Really hard stuff too. Other than that it could be one of the many they lump in as Northern Beech. Mesmate, Yellow Stringy, White Mahogany.

Looks a bit like Manna gum, I'm in the process of milling a log at the moment and some of the smaller pieces that I've cut on the bandsaw have the same pinkish colour through out.

But then again the other sugestions make sence as well,
