Question Making a round / cylindrical box

    Hi there all,

I have been thinking rather hard but could not figure out how to make a round box.

I am trying to make 1 about 15cm in diameter, and 5mm in thickness.

I am thinking of hollowing out a solid piece of block wood, but seems rather inefficient and wasteful, not to mention expensive!!

    Tks !!!

    Cheers

The Easiest way would be to turn it on a lathe.
Doing it by hand with multiples of joints as in coopering, requires all those stave joints to be angled correctly to arrive at your circular design.
Then there's the shaping, dimensioning, cold fitting, glueing etc to take into consideration.
If you're not into woodturning then there are countless woodturners around who would do the task for you..they are usually in the yellow pages or local woodworking clubs.

You might also want to check out a Shaker style round box if you can live with less than 5mm thick sides.

Basically, it's created by steaming and bending the wood.

Derek Cohen posted a link in an erlier topic (check out "steaming" on this board) to a guy who has a cable show on Fox who apparently covered this in one of his episodes.
