dismantling pens
Hi,
This maybe a quick question but I have a feeling it may be a long answer.
Have made a couple of stuff up on the Carbatec pen 2 roller ball.My problem is that the wood is splitting on the end when you press home the fitting.
Any ideas on dismantling a pen after it is finished. If I can get it apart I will turn another blank.
I hope someone, somewhere, sometime will have the answer.
Regards
Terry

gpw have a pen dissasembling kit. basically you just need a few different bits of metal ( i use a screwdriver ) and just tap them out.

Disassembly kit? What'll they think of next?
I simply use a couple of sets of old screwdrivers that I've modified by cutting the ends off. (They were knackered before I chopped 'em up, of course! ) One set has been bevelled like a centre-punch so it won't mark inside nibs, the other set has nice, crisp, sharpish edges, like a good nail-punch. The latter are good for removing mechanisms or internally pressed tubes without wedging itself in the thread, etc.
I slip the mechanism over the end of a "centre-punch" 'driver then, holding it by the timber, I tap the handle smartly on a bench a few times. Once the nib/finial is out, it's just a matter of finding a "nail-punch" screwdriver that fits snugly in the tube to knock any fixtures out of the centre-band end.
For some "harder to persuade the mechanism out" pens (slimlines can be PITAs ) I've a steel block with a series of differently sized holes drilled through it. I clamp this in a bench-vice, remove the nib/finial as above then insert the mechanism end in an appropriate sized hole, so the tube's supported by the block, and use the screwdriver with a BIG hammer. (Muck me around will they?!)

DO NOT use your pen mill upside down and tap it on an anvil. The skin from your hand might get caught between the blades and the barrel of the pen.
.. or so I hear.
damn. I should have a safety officer with me at all timesmaker of the original ResinSaver mold

Terry you can get a set of pin puches from Bunnings that do the job, they call them transfer punches. If they are too small you can make some out of hardwood for the larger pens like your Statesman, Gentleman, Emperor, Lotus or Imperials. See Eddie the master baiter has chimmed in with nothing at all again, thanks Ed

Bdar,I took a trip to Bunnings and looked at the pin punches. Very expensive.
At $ 11.30 each and I would need a few different sizes I went home and dug out the old drill bit box.
Stick the blunt end in the pen and the sharp end in a wood handle and you can whackaway with all your mite.
Worked for me.

Some of the pens come apart quite easily I had to pull apart a pen 9 & an americana without too much problem but the current "pen 1" seem to be a tight fit and I havn't beeen able to get one apart whole yet.
cheersAny thing with sharp teeth eats meat.
Most powertools have sharp teeth.
People are made of meat.
Abrasives can be just as dangerous as a blade.....and 10 times more painfull.
